breakfast...the most important meal of the day

Best places for vegan breakfast:

Penny Cluse Cafe...get ready to...wait! But if you need a half hour to work up your appetite, this is the place to go. Freshly-squeezed tangerine juice, coffee with soymilk, and flavor-bursting tofu scramble make for a good start to your day. Unfortunately some items on the menu aren't vegan that could be, like polenta or homefries.

Magnolia Bistro has a pretty good breakfast, but can be inconsistent. Get a side of fruit! The vegan french toast is a bit dry sometimes, and the veggie sausage isn't vegan :( Tofu scrams are tasty but can be unbelievably tiny. Their strawberry jam is homemade and incredible.

Nunyuns Bakery & Deli in the North End has a tasty vegan breakfast of homefries, toast and tempeh bacon. The owners are really nice, hopefully they will start making vegan pastry too.

City Market for something simple - a bagel with Tofutti cream cheese, for example. Personally I was disappointed by the blandness of the Humane Society breakfast sandwich. (And what's up with the "Hippie Cooler" sign over the vegetarian case?)

If you're willing to go a little further, try...
Sneakers Bistro & Cafe in Winooski. They have seitan hash and breakfast burritos and will substitute tofu for eggs for $1.95 extra. Be prepared to wait though! Lunch starts after 11am.

Where to go when you're craving vegan pastry!

Stone Soup has an impressive daily selection of muffins, scones, cookies, bars and crumbles. The vegan thumbrint cookies & muffins are wonderful; the regular cookies are stale. The chocolate cake is a bit too stiff for my liking. Sometimes they have discounted leftover muffins!

Radio Bean
has amazing vegan cinnamon rolls every morning, decadent giant everything-cookies, and cupcakes that will melt your soul.

New Ethic has homemade donuts on Saturday mornings, as well as the same cinnamon rolls and cupcakes as Radio Bean.

City Market has decent vegan chocolate chip cookies if you get there early.
They used to have great vegan muffins that sold out ridiculously fast, not sure what happened to them.

Menores

Can't say I recommend it. Just went there one time. Nice atmosphere but...we were waited on by 4 different people, and I was disgusted to get halfway through my taco salad before discovering a large piece of beef mixed into the lettuce. Not a lot of vegetarian options, either.

American Flatbread

I love pizza as much as any cheese-eater, and American Flatbread is definitely good pizza.

Thumbs up:
They take money off the price off your pizza when you say "no cheese please". Yummy toppings like caramelized onions, arugula and kalamata olives. Good place to bring your non-vegan friends.

Thumbs down:
Sometimes they forget to tell the chef "no cheese" and you end up eating when everyone else is finished. But they don't mind, because they get to take home free pizza. There aren't any toppings with PROTEIN! Hopefully they at least get nuts. I would love to see some locally made seitan or tofu on the menu though. Also, the place is usually packed so be prepared to wait (especially on Mondays when everything else is closed).

New Ethic Cafe

I haven't tried everything on the menu, but generally I dig this place. Even my mom, a hard-core meat-eater, liked it (that doesn't mean your mom definitely will though.)

Website:http://www.newethiccafe.com/index.htm
Phone: 802-540-2834
Price: $6-8 for an entree

Thumbs up:
It's 100% vegan. You can order anything on the menu!
LOVE the Cobb Salad (it's huge), Notcho/Mexican Plate, and Sweet Chili Burger. The Soul Food Plate is awesome too but I prefer a side salad over green beans. Friendly staff, clean, airy space with upbeat music and free wifi. Perfect portion sizes. Yummy desserts, when they have 'em.

Thumbs down:
Food isn't always HOT. Their website says they close at 9 but it's actually 8 (winter hours?) I think the caesar salad is gross (mustardy with way too many croutons) and the plantain burger was dry. It would be amazing if they had a soup of the day.

Overall: a must-eat for Burlington veg*ns & friends :)

Welcome

Hello! Welcome to my blog. I hope you find it helpful. I've found that as a vegan in Burlington, VT, one can get a little sick of the restaurant options. Certainly Burlington is way more vegan-friendly than a lot places, but sometimes you just need a little extra inspiration when "hunting" for a meal here. TA DA! That's where I come in. I'll try to keep you up to date with new places that open up, and places you might not have thought to try.

Happy eating!
